Overview

A magnetic closure box gives chocolate brands something a flat folding carton cannot — a satisfying snap on closing, the heft of a rigid lid, and a clean shelf face that holds up after repeated handling in retail environments.

This magnetic closure box holds a five-piece chocolate assortment and measures 240 × 62 × 35.5 mm. A long PET viewing window runs across most of the lid length, keeping the chocolates visible without opening the box.

The lid pivots upward along the full rear edge and closes using two pairs of embedded round neodymium magnets, one pair toward each end rather than a single centre magnet. At 240 mm long, a single magnet would leave both ends vulnerable to lifting after repeated retail handling — the dual-pair configuration distributes closing force evenly and keeps the lid flush over time.

Topvisio is a magnetic closure box manufacturer based in Dongguan, Guangdong, China, supplying this structure with FSC certification, ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 documentation, and for brands shipping into the EU, material composition and packaging-weight data compliant with the PPWR. MOQ is 1,000 units, sample lead time 7 days, production 30–45 business days after sample approval.

Drawer and book-style boxes have a monthly production capacity of up to 800,000 units.

Materials and Construction

The lid is built from 157 gsm coated duplex board wrapped over a 1,000 gsm grey core. The base uses the same combination — 157 gsm duplex wrap over 1,000 gsm grey board.

Across the entire exterior we apply a matte film lamination in solid charcoal grey. No printing on the outside. The box reads as one continuous dark surface broken only by the PET window.

The interior walls are lined with what we call a double-tube wrap — 157 gsm coated duplex paper laminated to the inside of every wall, all four sides plus the floor.

This is what hides the grey board edge and gives the inside a finished feel rather than a raw cardboard finish.

Brand text and product information are printed on this interior liner, in white ink.

The print sits on the inside of the lid where the buyer sees it first when opening.

The transparent strip down the centre of the lid is a die-cut PET window.

We cut the opening in the lid panel before assembly, then bond a clear PET sheet behind the opening from inside.

The sheet is rigid enough to hold its shape across the 240 mm span, and the matte lamination on the surrounding lid panel hides the bond line.

Inside the base sits a black PP vacuum-formed tray with five square cavities — one cavity per chocolate piece.

The tray is removable, not glued.

Above the tray is a flat clear PET sheet that drops in flush with the tray rim.

This second sheet protects the chocolates during shipping and lifts out with the tray when the buyer opens the box.

What Makes This Magnetic Closure Box Different from a Standard One

Most magnetic closure boxes you see in retail are square or near-square. The long, narrow proportions of this magnetic closure box — 240 mm by 62 mm — introduce a few production problems that do not appear on standard formats.

The first is magnet alignment. On a square magnetic closure box you can usually get away with one pair of magnets, centred. At 240 mm long, that centre pair holds the middle of the lid down fine but leaves both ends free to flex upward by 2 to 3 mm. Buyers feel that gap the moment they pick the box up. Two pairs of magnets, set roughly 30 mm in from each end, eliminate this flex.

The second is window registration. The PET window runs almost the full length of the lid. The opening is die-cut after the lid wrap is laminated, which means the cut tool has to pass through the printed paper, the adhesive layer, and the grey board in one stroke. Any drift in the die plate, and the window edge sits a millimetre off-centre — visible on a panel this long.

The third is matte film lamination on a dark base colour. Matte film tends to show every fingerprint and every small scratch from the assembly line. We had to switch to a low-rub matte film and slow down the lamination roller speed by about 20 percent to keep the surface clean coming off the machine.

Customisation Options

Every magnetic closure box we run is built to a customer spec rather than from a stock catalogue. The points where customers most often want changes:

Exterior colour and finish — solid charcoal is the default for this design, but the matte film can be tinted to any Pantone reference, or replaced with soft-touch coating for a more tactile surface. Hot foil stamping in gold, silver, copper, or rose gold can be added to the lid for brand logo or product name.

Window shape — the long centre strip is the default, but we can die-cut the window to any outline: a brand monogram, a square, an oval, or split into multiple smaller windows. Each window shape needs its own die plate, which adds about three days to the prototype lead time.

Interior tray — the standard cavity count for this footprint is five. We can adapt the PP tray to hold three larger pieces, six smaller pieces, or a mixed configuration. The tray tool itself runs about USD 800 to 1,200 depending on cavity complexity.

Magnet count and placement — two pairs is what we recommend for the 240 mm span on this magnetic closure box. For shorter formats — 160 mm and under — we drop to one pair to save cost.

Interior print — white ink on the inner liner is the default, but full CMYK printing is also available on the same liner stock.

Who Orders This Magnetic Closure Box

Chocolate brands selling at premium price points order this magnetic closure box format most often. The window strip lets shoppers see the product without opening the box, which matters at gift counters where buyers compare several options side by side before choosing.

The magnetic closure gives a deliberate opening action that feels different from a tucked carton — it slows the moment down and signals premium.

We also see this magnetic closure box ordered by hotel gift shops, airline duty-free buyers, and corporate gift programmes. The narrow 62 mm depth lets the box fit into a standard envelope-shaped carrier bag or a slim outer mailer without bulking. The 240 mm length lines up with most retail shelf modules.

For brands selling chocolate bars rather than chocolate pieces, the same magnetic closure box format can be adapted by changing the interior tray — a single long cavity instead of five squares. The exterior structure stays the same.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q1: What is a magnetic closure box?

A magnetic closure box is a rigid paperboard packaging structure where the lid is held shut by small magnets rather than a tuck flap, ribbon, or friction fit.

The magnets sit hidden between layers of board and paper.

Most magnetic closure box designs use either a book-style hinge — lid attached along one edge — or a separate detachable lid.

Q2: How are the magnets held in place?

Each magnet is bonded into a small recess cut into the grey board, then covered by the outer paper wrap.

From the outside there is no visible seam or fastener.

We use neodymium magnets rated for 800 to 1,000 grams of pull force per pair, which holds reliably without making the lid hard to open on this magnetic closure box.

Q3: Is the PET window food-safe?

The PET window sheet itself is a food-contact grade material, but the window is not in direct contact with the chocolate.

The five chocolates sit in the PP vacuum tray, covered by a separate clear PET sheet.

Both layers between the window and the product are food-contact grade.

Q4: What is the minimum order quantity?

MOQ for this magnetic closure box is 1,000 units per design.

Below 1,000 the per-unit tooling cost becomes hard to absorb.

For first-time prototypes we can build a single sample within 7 days after the artwork is approved.

Q5: How long is production after sample approval?

Standard production runs 30–45 business days after sample sign-off.

This includes paper printing, die-cutting, board laminating, hand assembly, magnet bonding, tray vacuum-forming, and final inspection.

Q6: Can buyers see the chocolates through the window in low retail lighting?

Yes. The PET sheet is optically clear, and the matte black tray inside provides a strong contrast background for most chocolate colours.

We run a test under 200-lux warehouse light during sample sign-off to confirm visibility on this magnetic closure box before the order ships.

Q7: Who is Topvisio and is this magnetic closure box available with FSC, ISO, and PPWR documentation?

Topvisio is a magnetic closure box manufacturer based in Dongguan, Guangdong, China. This structure can be supplied with FSC certification, ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 documentation, and for brands shipping into the EU, material composition and packaging-weight data compliant with the PPWR.
